Salt Lake County Open Space encompasses a diverse network of preserved natural lands providing essential habitat, scenic beauty, and extensive recreational opportunities near the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.
Salt Lake County Open Space consists of various protected parcels totaling thousands of acres located primarily along the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains and adjoining valley lands. This network of open space areas was established and continues to be managed by Salt Lake County with a mission to conserve natural landscapes, wildlife habitats, and cultural resources while offering public access to trails and outdoor activities. The geography spans from foothill ridgelines and canyon slopes to riparian corridors and wetlands. Ecologically, these areas support diverse ecosystems including sagebrush steppe, mixed conifer forests, and riparian zones that provide important habitat for mule deer, elk, raptors, and numerous smaller mammals and birds. Historically, these lands have cultural significance to Indigenous peoples such as the Ute and Shoshone tribes and also preserve remnants of pioneer-era ranching. Recreationally, Salt Lake County Open Space offers hiking, mountain biking, trail running, bird watching, and horseback riding across more than 100 miles of interconnected multi-use trails. Notable open space areas within the county system include Red Butte Open Space, Parleys Historic Nature Park, and portions of Big Cottonwood Canyon foothills. Visitors enjoy panoramic views of the Salt Lake Valley, wildflower displays in spring, and access to both urban and natural settings in close proximity. The open space system plays a critical role in maintaining regional air and water quality as well as providing residents with vital outdoor green spaces.
